Mom Trends New York
Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 04:22PM Filmmaker Janet Grillo has just delivered a very special movie to filmlovers and mothers everywhere. Fly Away is a feature film about a single mom raising an autistic child and the challenges this family faces as the child becomes a young adult.
The challenges the mother in the film faces are the same challenges so many of moms with special needs children face, and challenges that our society as a whole must face, as a generation of children with autism become a generation of adults with autism.
This review in Variety says it all: “Anyone offering a plot synopsis of “Fly Away” runs the risk of making writer-director Jane Grillo’s debut feature sound like dozens of similarly themed made-for-TV tearjerkers. So it will behoove any venturesome distributor that picks up this indie drama to find a way of playing up the pic’s distinguishing strengths: exceptional performances by two female leads and sensitive but unsentimental storytelling throughout.”
Special appearance with the filmamker Janet Grillo on Wednesday, April 2oth and Thursday, April 21s at the Village East Cinema.
